Week 1: June 27- July 1
Inventions: The Science of History
The Industrial Revolution brought about many changes. Changes came in the form of an increase of faster transportation, more food, movement to cities and machines making life easier. This program will look at some of these inventions and inventors from the area, the process of inventing, and how these machines worked while campers try their hand at creating their own inventions.
Week 2: July 11-July 14
History Mysteries I
Join us for a week of examining and learning about unusual objects in our education collection that focus on traditional food. Campers will learn how to; identify an object, tell whether it is real or fake, ‘read’ an object to tell its story as well as how to display this particular group of objects. At the end of the week campers will prepare an exhibit to showcase their work.
Week 3: July 18-July 21
Missions, Trails and Conquests
Come explore the missions and trails that lead to the growth of the Paso del Norte. Campers will learn about the effects on the region and people from the Spanish conquests, the importance of trails and the missions of El Paso. Campers will also learn about the how these original Spanish settlements would shape the history of El Paso through recreating trails on maps and investigating their journey, artifacts of the Spanish settlers, and building missions out of adobe.
Week 4: July 25- July 28
History Mysteries II
Join us for a week of examining and learning about unusual objects in our education collection that focuses on tools and horse paraphernalia. Campers will learn how to; identify an object, tell whether it is real or fake, ‘read’ an object to tell its story as well as how to display this particular group of objects. At the end of the week campers will prepare an exhibit to showcase their work.
Week 5: August 1- August 4
Stories, Crafts, and Culture on the Border
What makes El Paso unique? Its people, culture and history! Learn about El Paso through exploring El Paso crafts: papel picado and pottery; local legends: La Llorona, the Legend of the Bluebonnet and the Blue Nun; sports; and history such as: western gunfights and the stories of hidden gold in the mountains.
Week 6: August 8- August 11
Learn the tricks of the trade with your digital device. Learn how to take better selfies, pictures of friends, architecture, and nature through some simple techniques and hacks. You will also learn how to use several free applications to edit photographs, create art and tell digital stories. Please bring a smartphone with picture taking abilities.
