Talk: Don Felix Martinez, A Builder of El Paso
Felix Martinez was described in one article as “the outstanding Hispanic of his time.”
In the short twenty years after moving to El Paso until his untimely death in 1916, he was a principal in (among other things) the Paso Del Norte Hotel, the Center Building, Southwestern Portland Cement, and The El Paso Daily News.
His civic involvements included the Chamber of Commerce, the Water Users Association, and the establishing the El Paso Public Library.
Mayor Tom Lea said of him:” In the death of Félix Martínez the city of El Paso suffers a distinct loss. Such men as he are a rarity and El Paso as well as the State can ill afford to lose such a type of citizen. El Paso was his dream, of which he never tired of talking.”
This talk is given by Mr. Ron Hagquist.
