Author Dave Gutierrez discusses his book, Patriots from the Barrio

A true story of a U.S. combat unit during WWII.   Author Dave Gutierrez researched the biography of relative Ramon G. Gutierrez, who served in the 36th Division, 141st Regiment, 2nd Battalion Company E. The original Texas National Guard unit from El Paso was comprised entirely of Mexican Americans from the barrios of Texas. They took part in some the most crucial battles of WWII in Italy. Gutierrez spent four years of research on his book and compiled several individual stories to tell one incredible account of U.S. Army battles in Italy. Gutierrez records the sensitive subjects of discrimination, segregation of schools and the illegal deportation of Mexican Americans during the Great Depression. His relative, Ramon Gutierrez, from Del Rio Texas was awarded the Silver Star and three Purple Hearts. Captured by the enemy twice, he was able to escape and make it back across to Allied lines. He would become one of only a few Americans to be decorated for valor on the battlefield by the Soviet Union during WWII. His true story and the men that served in the U.S. Army’s unique and historical all Mexican American combat unit is chronicled in Patriots from the Barrio.
