Courage and Death: How Tom Lea’s Brave Bulls Shaped his Paintings of War presented in speech & song –Jose Mario Sanchez – founder of the Custodia San Pablo (a restaurant, performance space and bullfighting museum) in Juàrez- gives a multimedia presentation that links Tom Lea’s war paintings to the bullfight, which originated in Portugal as a way for soldiers to prepare for war, and – over time – inspired the corrida, which dramatizes how man and beast face death with courage. Sanchez, an operatic singer, will also perform WWII songs with accompaniment near Tom Lea’s mural, Southwest, which was painted for the El Paso Public Library Southwest reading room, but is temporarily exhibited at EPMH.
